PrintThe warm summer-like sun burst over the horizon on October 15, 2016. In some respects, this sunrise was not unlike any that occurred in Flat Rock, OH during the past 150 years. However, this day marked a special occasion: the celebration of 150 years of mission and ministry of Flat Rock Homes which was marked with an evening of recognition, legacy and hope.

Founded in 1866 in Tiffin, OH, the mission focused on serving children orphaned by the Civil War.

By 1867, the original orphanage building was too small to meet the need, so the orphanage moved to a farm in Flat Rock, OH. The home known as the Ebenezer Orphan Institute of the Evangelical Association, dedicated to “God, Benevolence, Education and _b7a5304Charity.” Flat Rock Children’s Home, in its various forms, served as the national orphanage for the Evangelical Association and the Evangelical United Brethren Church for many years. In 1968, Flat Rock Homes became affiliated with the East Ohio Conference, United Methodist Church, following a merger of the Evangelical United Brethren Church and the Methodist Church. Following a severe blizzard in the winter of 1978, which destroyed the main building on the campus of Flat Rock Children’s Home, the focus of Flat Rock’s ministry transitioned from an orphanage to serving children with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Today, Flat Rock is a full-spectrum preferred care provider for individuals with intellectual & developmental disabilities in Ohio.

The event began at 4:00pm with light Hors d’oeuvres with the program scheduled to begin at 4:30pm. Mr. Jeremy Pifer, member of the Flat Rock Homes Board of Directors, emceed the event. Ms. Therese West, Ms. Elisabeth Brunker, Ms. Kavita Shankar and Ms. Emily Small, students at Baldwin-Wallace University, graced the event by sharing their music. Creative Cuisine (Sandusky, OH) catered the event serving delicious entrees such as homemade four layer lasagna, champagne chicken and roast beef sirloin._b7a5233
